There’s no way around it. Living in Memphis teaches you a thing or two about fried chicken. It’s just as essential as barbecue and we ate a heck of a lot of it. Particularly, Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken is our kryptonite. Whatever buttermilk, seasonings or chicken they’re using, it makes you weak in the knees.
Luckily for us, Memphis followed us to Chicago. Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken recently opened a restaurant on West Fulton Market in the West Loop. And the chicken is the same! Its distinctive lightly coated chicken skin was perfectly done and seasoned just like we remembered.
They also got all the sides and taste pretty close to what we remembered: the collard greens, the beans, the potato salad and those awesome fried green tomatoes! Plus, there’s a pretty nice bar, although we prefer to wash it all down with a large cup of sweet tea.
Another nice thing about the new location is that it's close to the United Center, so it’s the perfect spot for game night if you are attending a Blackhawks game.
Of course, we might be biased, but we’ve tried a lot of friend chicken in Chicago and nothing compares to Gus’s perfection. There, we said it.
